Born in 1944 in Belgium, near Brussels.
He studied violin at the Conservatory of Brussels and Bruges, completing his studies under the guidance of Maurice Raskin in 1964. From his youth he became interested in early music, with his brother Wieland. It reached a thorough knowledge of the repertoire of the seventeenth and eighteenth century both in terms of performance techniques and conventions of interpretation. This led to the introduction of a more authentic way of playing the violin, where the instrument was no longer held under the chin, but resting freely on the shoulder, this new technique was crucial in the approach to the violin repertoire and is was subsequently adopted by many violinists, since the early seventies. From 1964 to 1972 was part Sigiswald Kuijken Ensemble Alarius with Wieland Kuijken, Robert Kohnen and Janine Rubinlicht, performing throughout Europe and the United States. He later collaborated with leading early music specialists such as his brothers Wieland and Barthold, Gustav Leonhardt, Robert Kohnen, and Anner Bylsma, Frans Brüggen and René Jacobs. In 1972, at the suggestion of Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, and along with Gustav Leonhardt, he founded the baroque orchestra La Petite Bande. In 1986 he founded the Kuijken String Quartet (with François Fernandez, Marleen Thiers and Wieland Kuijken). From 1971 to 1996 he taught violin Sigiswald Kuijken Baroque at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Since 1993 he has taught at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels. It has also been invited to hold classes at major conservatories such as the Royal College of Music in London, the University of Salamanca and the Chigi Academy in Siena.
